Week 4 – Artists OTW – Tom Sachs & Johanna Fateman

Tom Sachs is a very popular and famous sculptor who was known for his sculptures of modern icons. He was also know for being very resourceful as he would take everyday household items and turn them into a piece of art that demonstrated great skill in engineering and design. Tom Sachs began his art career by producing zines when he was only in highschool, and around a decade later his zines would be recognized as great works of art.

Johanna Fatemen is a known musician, songwriter, author and producer. Fatemen is a part of the post-punk rock band named Le Tigre. She also founded another band called Men with one of her band mates named JD Samson. She began her writing career with zines, this is also how she met the majority of her band mates.

One major difference between these two Zine creators is that Tom sachs works generally did not have a main focus or topic, Sachs style of zine was known as bricolage. Common themes in Sachs work was punk, satanic and technological concepts. Johanna Fatemen however wrote zines to go against popular organizations that she did not agree with. Fatemen was known and respected for her “DIY” style of writing and illustrating. unlike Sachs Fatemen’s zines always had a topic at hand and her art within the zines expressed her feeling towards that certain topic.
