Week 7 – Artist – Annie Leibovitz & Nan Goldin

1.) Annie Leibovitz is an famous American photographer that is best know for her dramatic and engaging portraits. She was also knows for working with many celebrities. Another possible reason for her popularity could be contributed to the fact that she took the last photographs of John Lennon and Yoko Ono before their deaths. She was also the first women to have an art exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery of Washington.

2.) Nan Goldin is a contemporary American photography. She became popular in the 80s and this was due to her unique style. Her style was often described as intimate, gritty, chaotic at times and filled with symbolism of love. She was also a photography that had a main focus on showing and exposing the public to the LGBTQ community.

3.)

This is a portrait of one of my personal favorite artists, Kendrick Lamar. I really enjoy this piece because it has a Graphic Design aspect as there are two portraits in one, with if the the portraits being very well blending into the main image which gives off a very interesting and unique style. I feel a connection to this image because of the the inspiration the artists being photographed has given me, as a musician I am always looking to new people to inspire my own creative vision and Kendrick Lamar has been one of those inspirations for me and many others for a very long time.

4.)

This photo taken by Nan Goldin is titled “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency.” I believe this is my favorite painting by Goldin because of the grittiness and realness of the photo. I really enjoy how the photo looks candid and not set up or prepared before hand, i enjoy the natural look. I think this image also shows how sex life was in the 80s and 90s. I feel a connection to Goldin as an artists because she is unwavering and willing to say what she want and will fight for what is right.

5.) I believe that Nan Goldin’s works are far more realistic and true to the real world then Annie Leibovitz’ works. I think it matter but only depending on the viewer of the photo, some viewers prefer a more clean cut image while there are those that enjoy the realism of candid photos.

6.) For my own portraits, I would personally like Nan Goldin more. This is because I have always been in love with photography that doesn’t not looked stage but feather photos that looked like the photographer took it at just the right moment.
